Third time's a charm
Another daycare-to-home run this morning, and the pace time just keeps getting better. Today, it was 6'34". I figure once it's down to 6'25" or lower, I'll switch to a longer distance. And the timing is good, too, since Astrid is scheduled to start full days next week, and I told work I was only available to freelance in the mornings (don't tell on me!). I'm sure I'll need the afternoon runs to clear my head of work stuff and get ready for my mum stuff evenings.
I'm Back!!!
To begin, I was getting caught up on my reading and noticed Lisa wrote something about milk and cookies... So I decided to have some while reading the blog... Good idea!!
The good news is I am considerably less sick and am almost energetic (i.e. I'm only exhausted, not dead on my feet)
The Beaches was great, but I never made it to the boardwalk for my run. We're going back at Thanksgiving and I am hopeful that with Arun with me this time, I may actually get a run in.
So, I've taken a week off from all exercise but am hoping to run Friday night and Sunday morning this week. I went back to Pilates this week. Still hate it, still know it is good for me. Doing another class on Thursdays... I do think alternate exercises are good for me. I enjoy running and don't like doing anything else, but I'm worried that if I don't do some of this stretching crap, I'll end up hurting myself.
Love the fact that some of you are aiming for under 60 minutes... I need a little motivation. I'll let you know what my time and distances are like at the end of the week. It's naptime now!! KT

Second time out
My one day off turned into a few more than that, but I made it out for my second run in months today. Granted, it was only to Astrid's daycare, so again only 2.5km. But my pace time was faster (6'45"), and I wasn't tired when I got there. Go me!
Glad to see that Jenn and Lisa are continuing to do their thing, and that Sarah is back to enjoying running (albeit on the dreadmill). What about the rest of you? Hopefully Katie's having fun running in the Beach, and the others are getting out too!

Here's to another week
Hello!
This has been a terrific week in all aspects except running! Oh well, can't have it all.
I ran the Underwear Affair 10k race last Saturday (and clocked my best time, 55:41!). I was nursing bad blisters on the backs of my heels (from wearing cute shoes on Friday). The blisters (surprisingly) did not bother me at all during my race, only afterward when I saw the blood stained socks and shoes! Gross!
So I took a few days off to let my heels heal, and then got hit with a cold! I "coldFx-ed" it right away, and managed to stave off the worst of it. But all my energy was going into fighting the cold, I simply didn't have it in me to add a run to my routine.
I planned a nice run for this weekend, but am punishingly sore from a double-header match of tennis. I'm surprised because I thought with all my running I'm in decent shape, but clearly we use different muscles on the tennis court then we do when we run! Ouch!
I start my new job tomorrow and will re-adapt my running schedule to my new routine. I'm hoping (planning) that this new routine will include a few yoga classes each week (running and yoga go together like... well, cookies and milk!).
Keep at it ladies....

Another tough day!
The air has been so heavy, lately, resulting in lots of headaches for me. This morning was no exception and so, instead of joining the running room 8:30 am run, I took my meds and went back to bed. Unable to sleep, I decided to put on my shoes and do a half hour around the canal. It looked cold outside, so I put on my 3/4 length sleeve shirt and went. It was hot and humid and my legs felt like lead. I think I managed about 3 km or so. It felt as though I was running through molasses...what I wouldn't have done for an air-conditioned gym! Anyway, I called Krisi after, as we had plans to meet up for breakfast, and she was, as always, a great cheerleader. She reminded me that I had gone running with a migraine on a humid Sunday morning, which was better than just lying in bed. She's right. I did.
Tomorrow will be better!

Slowly getting started
Yesterday was my first time out for a run in about two months. I was on a bit of a roll in the summer, running 3x a week while pushing Astrid in her jogging stroller, but then my knee decided to conk out and I had to give it up for awhile. And then, just as it was getting better, life got hectic again and I couldn't find the time (or didn't have the energy). But now that Astrid is settling in to daycare (or, playcare, as we're brainwashing her to think of it), I have both time and energy. Wahey!
So, back to the run. It was a short one, from Astrid's playcare to home, but it felt pretty good. A distance of about 2.5km, with a pace time of a little under 7' per km. Admittedly, that's a lot slower than my normal pace, but I'm still feeling good about it. My quads are a little on the sore side today, so I will just stretch and walk on this, my day off, and go for another run tomorrow. Once around Parc Lafontaine is roughly 2.5km, so we'll aim for that and, if I feel good, maybe a bit more.
Slow and steady wins the race, right? If I can do this 10K under 60', I'll be delighted.

8k on my first day out
Hi Everyone!
Today I finally (finally) went for my first run. I'm visiting Lori in Vancouver and we headed to her gym. To be perfectly honest, I probably wouldn't have gone running without the peer pressure, but I did and it was awesome.
I'm not really a treadmill kind of girl... or so I thought! But it's really amazing to have a machine tell you exactly how fast and far you're running, and how high your heart rate is. And you can adjust your running speed at the incline at which you're running. So I got going on the treadmill and I was amazed at my results... I did a 10 minute warm-up speed-walk (at a rate of 4 mph), then ran for 40 minutes (at a rate of 5.3 mph), then did a cool-down speed-walk for 10 mins, then another 5 mins of slow walking. So a total of 65 minutes of moving, and 5.0 miles, which translates to 8.0 kms! YAY!
I didn't have my iPod so I spent most of the time multiplying the accumulating miles by 1.6 in order to figure out how many kms I had run.
Can't wait to go again tomorrow!

A little Tuesday Whinge
Once I get into a routine, I find it really frustrating to have to break a pattern. Alas, my weather-predicting head is doing it for me. I'm supposed to run with my clinic tonight, but I've been up with a headache since about 3am (with a brief hour or two of medicated sleep from around 6 - 8am. I am so frustrated, particularly because I will have to miss next week, too, for Rosh Hashannah. I'm definitely going to get out there tomorrow....let's hope for a good sleep tonight and some normal weather tomorrow.
Man, I am seriously better than the weather network.

Running Shoes!
Hi runners,
A reminder if anyone is considering buying new running shoes for the race: get them soon! It's best not to break-in new runners on race day.
Personally, I am due for a new pair. I think I will stick with the same brand, MiZuno. As your running progresses, you may come to experience some brand loyalty with regard to your running shoes. You might find that a certain brand fits your feet best.
My only consideration is whether to buy a pair more suited for winter running - something more rugged, with more grip. However, a running friend of mine wears grips (picture an elasticy thing with little screws sticking out that you wrap under your running shoe). I'm thinking of doing the same this winter season, and foregoing the winterized running shoe altogether. I repeatedly turned-over on my left ankle last winter and attribute it to the bulky nature of the winter shoe (and the icy sidewalks of course!). But more on winter running later... ;)

Possibly the flattest race ever
Just a quick note about how ideal the Cap St-Jaques Race is for your first 10k.
Not only is Cap St-Jaques a nature park, but it is probably one of the flattest courses in Quebec! This is very good news because as long as you pace yourself (and take as many walk breaks as you need), it is not a hard race.
The race takes place along trails throughout the park and truly makes for a picturesque and scenic run. What better way to distract yourself than with an array of interesting plants and wildlife!
So if you are nervous at all about racing, Cap St-Jaques is the perfect race for you.
Any takers for a Wednesday "fun run" at the Westmount Running Room!? I'll be there at 6pm!

Online pedometer... a good training tool!
Hello! I'd like to tell you all about Gmaps Pedometer!
Runners who don't wear a watch may find this online pedometer quite useful. The link is http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/
- Begin by typing your starting point (address) into the "Jump to:" feild
- Click "go" and you will get a map of your starting point
- Click the "Start recording" button on the left and DOUBLE CLICK along the map, following your running route
- As you click, Gmaps Pedometer will count your kilometers
You can do other sorts of things as well, like switch from miles to kms, count calories, and even account for elevation in your run.
So there is a handy tool I use as part of my training process.
Hope your all getting motivated!
Oh, and... ahem, any registrants for the race yet ... other than Jenn?!

I'm like Katie, reading but not writing. And just getting over a cold. It's going around. I know very few parents who don't have it. :(
Unlike Katie, however, I've not been cross-training. Or any kind of training, for that matter. The extent of my exercise regime these days is power-vacuuming the house. Though, I do climb four flights of stairs multiple times daily, often carrying close to 25lbs of infant and another 20lbs of stroller plus whatever purchases or toys we might have with us... That's got to count for something, right?
But...I am going to start running again this weekend or, at the very latest, early next week. My inlaws are visiting as of this evening, so I get some free babysitting until next Weds. Whee!!!
The flat course is encouraging. My 5K pace pushing a jogging stroller wasn't too bad, even with a few inclines. So, I know I can do this. I'll try and make a Weds or Sunday run one of these days - promise!

Blagh Blagh Blagh!!!
Dear Everyone,
I'm reading but not currently writing as I have nothing to report. I have been sick for six freakin days now and am slowly starting to lose my mind. On a positive note, I met someone else who does this run every year and likes it because it is so flat - for those who are new to running that might make it feel easier.
My goal over the fall was to do some cross-training. I sighned up for Pilates and went to my first class on Tuesday. As expected, I disliked it... Posture blagh, core strength blagh, balance blagh, flexibility double blagh,
Oh well, I knew this wouldn't be my favourite and if it can improve my posture than it can't be a totally bad thing.
I'm hoping that I'm better by next week when I'm flying with the girls to Toronto for five days and looking forward to some nice runs on the boardwalk.
Have to stop neglecting the kids now... KT

Dear Lisa,
My run tonight was really hard. I was dragging my butt. I think I need a day to rest, so, no exercise tomorrow. I am just going to chill at home.
Love Jenn
p.s. Do you think everyone else is ok? They're being awfully quiet.

I wasn't the slowest!
Another 6km at the Running Room last night...and I wasn't the last one in. Second to last, but still an improvement! I thought I was doing better than last week, but I actually came in three minutes slower. I like to blame the fact that we did a pretty long incline, up Cote Ste. Antoine and Grovenor. But I'm not as sore as I thought I would be and I am hoping the skies stay nice and clear so I can enjoy a leisurely canal run this evening. I will be going to the Sunday run club, which starts at 8:30. Anyone want to come and then go to a well-deserved brunch after?

Welcome new authors!
If there are some among us who are new to running, I want to let you know about the Learn to Run clinic. It's made especially for people who are... well, learning to run. It might be a good experience to help you train and get you started. If you are interested there is a new clinic starting on Monday Sept. 22 at 6:30pm at the Westmount Running Room (among other locations).
We've probably all noticed it's getting cooler outside! Personally, I find this the perfect time to run outdoors. When we run, our body temperature increases by approximately 5-degrees. So when we're running on a hot day, it can feel even hotter. So these cooler temperatures are really ideal for a good outdoor workout. Stepping out in your shorts and a t-shirt may feel chilly at first, but once your blood gets pumping and you start sweating, you'll feel grateful for the cooler temperatures. So try to remember that when your thinking about heading out for a run.
A few of you have asked about registering for the 10k Cap St-Jaques race. You have to register online, via the Running Room web site. The link is here: http://www.events.runningroom.com/site/?raceId=3524 Once you've registered, send a note out to the rest of us to let us know!
There is a 5k CIBC Run for the Cure race on October 5th. I'm thinking of running it, just for the "race experience" and to set another mini goal. Any interest??
Lastly, there are open runs at the Running Room on Wednesdays - meaning you don't have to be part of a clinic to run with the group. I know Jenn participates, and I usually do as well. Jenn is part of a clinic, I am not. The next run is Wednesday Sept 17 (tomorrow) at 6pm. There are a variety of different distances you can run, and there are always happy people to run with! It's truly a great way to train. So if anyone is interested, just show up at the Running Room Westmount Store (4873 Sherbrooke Ouest) for 6pm.
Happy running,
Lisa

Rain, rain go away!
Aaaargghh! I am a bit frustrated...I wanted to run yesterday and today, but had only a small window of opportunity in the early am. I didn't wake up early enough either day, and it was raining, which decreased my motivation. But I have run club tomorrow night and tonight I am going to kickboxng and yoga. If anyone is interested in doing some crosstraining, there is a promotion / challenge at my gym for the month of October: http://www.studiobreathe.com/membership/october2.asp
I also started my diet delivery today, and so far it has been yummy and filling.
http://www.nimdiet.com/
Hopefully, by the time the race day arrives i will be lighter and faster!
Looking forward to running with all of you, and celebrating after!

Hello girls!!
Well, here it is... our "support group" for the Cap St-Jaques Race on Novemeber 15th!! I put "support group" in quotations because in addition to providing motivation for our training, this blog will serve as a platform to share stories, tips and to coordinate a few runs together.
This blog belongs to all of us, so I've also added you all as authors and thus you are able to write to this blog. I've never used this feature before, so I'm anxious to see how it works.
If there is anyone else to add to this blog, by all means!! The more the merrier, the only criteria is that they must walk or run the 10km race on November 15th at Cap St-Jaques. Speaking of which, the first thing we all must do is REGISTER! Trust me when I say, among the two hardest parts about running a race are: 1) Getting started, and 2) Registering. So once you register, you've got half the hardest part done!
One more thing! You can also subscribe to this blog, which I recommend we all do so we can get email updates when there is a new entry. The subscription link should be at the bottom of this page.
So.... welcome to UNCAP the St-Jaques and more soon!
